This means that the dry season, when forests are most vulnerable to fire, lasts longer. The weather is warmer and dryer, and in the West, snow melts earlier in the year than it once did. Scientists say one of the main reasons causing the increase in megafires is climate change. Over the past 40 years, the average number of acres of forested land consumed by wildfire each year in the United States has increased by 1,000 percent. Once Rare, Now Common Megafires were once rare, but they are becoming increasingly common. Other wildfire experts expand the definition of a megafire beyond “acres burned” to mean wildfires that have an unusually large impact on people and the environment. Interagency Fire Center defines a megafire by its size: It is a wildfire that burns more than 40,500 hectares (100,000 acres) of land. The Yellowstone fire focused national attention on a growing wave of big fires eating up forests in the West as well as in other parts of the world. In August 1988, high winds changed small, smoldering wildfires in Yellowstone National Park into raging firestorms-an event that came to be known as “Black Saturday.” Today, wildfire experts call the burning of Yellowstone, located in the western United States, something else: a “ megafire.” When the smoke finally cleared, a vast area of forest-0.5 million hectares (1.2 million acres), nearly 36 percent of the park-had burned.

The Territory of Operation Auca The Territory of Operation Auca, inset map CHAPTER I I Dare Not Stay Home Key Through Gates of Splendour is still a powerful and poignant work of Christian literature and still has the power to move, inspire, and encourage Christians today. This edition also contains an excerpt from End of the Spear, written by Nate Saint's son who tells of his return to the jungle and to the tribe who killed his father. The book also continues the story of the Huaorani tribe and later missionaries' efforts to evangelise them. Written by the widow of Jim Elliot, Through Gates of Splendour tells of unconditional love and obedience to God, and the importance of evangelisation and how important these are to the Christian no matter where they are. Yet as it is already known, the missionaries' friendly overtures were met with violence and the five were killed. The Huaorani during the time of the missionaries' visit in the 1950s were locked in a violent blood-feud against their own clan members and outsiders, yet the five missionaries were steadfast in reaching this previously un-contactable tribe. Through Gates of Splendour tells the story of five American missionaries to Ecuador to evangelise the Auca (or Huaorani) people. “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” the fifth documentary feature directed by Laura Poitras (“Citizenfour,” “Risk”), is a portrait of Goldin, and a deft and satisfying one, though it’s not a conventional biography. They told the stories of the people in them, so the more you looked the more you saw. Her photographs, which she organized into slideshows like “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency,” seemed caught on the fly, but they were portraits. In fact, she had an extraordinary eye for composition. This, with 40 years’ hindsight, is telling, because what you see now is that Goldin was nothing less than a postpunk Diane Arbus, and that the deceptive “randomness” of her images pulsated with life, and was the key to their power and mystery. (You can read my reviews of the rest of the series here.) I’m not sure how well this one would have read without the background of the rest of the series – there are a lot of characters to track and various types of creatures (like fey and werewolves and all that other great paranormal stuff) interact in specific ways in Erin’s world, so I do recommend starting at the beginning and going from there. Erin writes likable characters and engaging scenarios, and I completely blew through this book as fast as I could. While this series is somewhat outside my normal reading fare, I’ve really enjoyed the journey. Oh my, time is flying by!! In the aftermath of a nasty storm, a father and son go to a grocery store to restock various food items. All I had was the vague recollection of flappy, bat creatures terrorizing people in a grocery store from the trailer I had seen years earlier. I was sick with a lingering cold and knew next to nothing about the movie. In many ways, it was the best of situations. But there I was the other night, remote control in hand, the red ribbon of Netflix booting up on my TV, ready to be lost in a horror pick. Were it not for the personal recommendation from Pastor Brito, the movie likely would have remained forever lost in the endless tunnels of Netflix. It flirts with brilliancy-plays footsie with it-like a pair of middle-schoolers who cannot truly reach the heights of love but mimic its form, perhaps even feeling like they’re swimming in love’s deeper currents.Īnd yet! The ending is so shockingly poignant-so shockingly unexpected (at least for me)-that the last five minutes of the film very nearly absolved all the overwrought and bewilderingly unrealistic moments. Rarely has a film confounded my movie sensibilities so powerfully as Frank Darabont’s “The Mist.” Somehow and in some way it is simultaneously terrible yet entertaining, ridiculous yet strangely compelling, pedestrian yet brilliant. |
