Brief Summary of Book: Fatty Legs: A True Story by Christy Jordan-Fenton ![]() ![]() ![]() Like Valley of the Dolls, the more interesting relationship is the one between the women of the book. Yargo himself and the shallow chemistry Janet perceives between the two of them is really just tacked on towards the end and it feels uncomfortably forced. The thin nightie cover and subtitle "A love story" is fairly misleading to the real direction and content of the story which is more of a chick version of Enemy Mine (1985) where a simple human and an alien have to overcome their differences to survive. That's a hell of a self esteem nightmare! She is thrown from a mediocre, streamlined existence into a supernatural situation where she is even more dramatically the odd one out and is literally put on trial to prove her worth. ![]() Janet's character, while simple minded and immature, is very relatable and easy to empathize with as she is stuck in a sort of quarter life crisis brought on by rigid societal expectations of women and an unsupportive network of loved ones. However, I found it just as engaging and hard to put down as her more renowned bestseller. Obviously this is a very different kind of story than Valley of the Dolls and was written with a pulpy sci-fi tone that is more fun and fluffy than her dark adult portraits of glamour and romance. ![]() ![]() However both Macbeth and his wife are restless because of their guilt. Some of the credit for this also goes to the fine writing in the series. Suchet's skill as an actor was such that he was able to turn a rather flat, implausible character (and even fans of Agatha Christie admit that her characters are pretty two-dimensional) into a complex, eccentric but essentially believable person. Every detail of the character was perfect, from the stilted, pedantic delivery to the exquisitely fastidious grooming. ![]() Suchet's performance as the fussy little Belgian detective was a joy. Mystery fans were fortunate in the late 1980s to have no less than 3 definitive television performances to enjoy: Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, and David Suchet as Hercule Poirot. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ancient Japan is portrayed at a distance: the samurai are shown as noble but innocent savages, foreign and one-dimensional, though the film clearly venerates their culture, albeit an inauthentic representation of it. “Orientalism” (a la Edward Said’s criticisms) is apparent throughout the film. The film stumbles its way into every modern Hollywood trope, in particular Tom Cruise plays the character of Captain Nathan Algren as a tortured and roguish alcoholic trying to atone for his past sins while living amongst the ‘mystical’ and ‘foreign’ peoples of Asia.’ It is a tiresome cliche. The Last Samurai is a beautifully shot film with an incredible score by Hans Zimmer, however the finished product is a painfully formulaic Hollywood film that disappointingly strains the audience’s credulity. ![]() ![]() ![]() It meshes the inner workings of the music industry from contracts to negotiations to recording to interviews to finding your next gig, combining it with the true meaning and passion of music while set to a journey of self-discovery.
